Libraries

History
In 1870, Milton voted to form a public library with public funds matched by private moneys.  Various “Reading” rooms were rented until the Central building was opened in 1904 on land bought by 26 citizens and donated to the town.  In 1958, a two-story addition was added to house Children and Young Adult collections.  The East Milton Library on Edge Hill Road, is an important part of the library system in Milton.

Funding
The Library is supported through Town appropriations, a state Library Incentive grant, two Town-operated Trusts, and Library-managed Trusts.  Last year, Friends of the Library raised over $92,000 for books.  They are currently in the process of raising money for renovations to the Children’s Room.  The Library has always been the recipient of generous gifts.  They are tax-deductible and tremendously appreciated.  Checks can be made out to the “Milton Public Library.”
