Transportation
- Medical - Volunteer drivers provide transportation
for ongoing treatments and doctors visits, Monday through Friday.
Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance through
the Council on Aging at 898-4893. Travel to Boston and local
appointments is provided. Parking fees and a $20 donation.
- Medical Van Days – Two days per month
the Council on Aging van provides rides for clients having local
medical appointments. Many of the area doctors are cooperating
by providing appointments for these specific days. Once
your appointment is made contact the Council on Aging at 898-4893.
- Food Shopping Van – Weekly marketing
service is available for seniors who have no other means of transportation
within their household. Shopping days are Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday to local markets. A $2 donation is requested.
- Shopping Van – On Tuesdays, the Van
takes seniors to East Milton Square and to South Shore Plaza.
Reservations must be made in advance at 898-4893.
Information Referral
- Seniors or families of seniors who are not certain as to what
services they are entitled, will be interviewed by the Outreach
staff and assisted in finding the proper program.
- Telephone inquiries are promptly answered and information given
for whatever services are needed.
- Referrals to the Visiting Nurses or other local agencies are
given for nurses, homecare, and other services.
Outreach
- Visits seniors and assesses their needs.
- Sets up programs for friendly visits with people unable to
attend programs at the senior center.
- Works with local youth groups for community service projects
for our seniors.
- Continually works with local organizations to promote the needs
and improve the resources for the senior population.
Intergenerational Programs
- Pen pal – a program is run with third
graders to promote writing skills for the youngsters and to encourage
communication with another generation.
- Friendly visits – a program for high
school students or other people to visit home bound seniors.
Social, Educational and Entertainment
- Bridge and cribbage groups meet at the senior center.
- Computer Ease – a pilot program for the Boston Computer
Society, teaches our seniors how to enjoy the world of computers.
The class is continually growing and the interest is great.
- Knitters for the homeless – a program for knitters to
knit goods and sell them in order to provide hat, mittens, sweaters,
and undergarments for the homeless.
- Book Club -- to read and discuss books.
- Friday Flicks – a chance to sit down with other seniors
and watch a movie each Friday at the Senior Center.
- Exercise/Wellness – a wonderful program run by a Professor
at Northeastern University, to keep all of our seniors in good
physical condition.
- Monthly Birthday Party – sponsored by BankBoston.
All seniors are invited and birthdays recognized.
Widowed Persons Support Group
Monthly meetings are held for men and women who have lost a spouse
and are looking for the comfort of other widowed people in a confidential,
informal setting. This group meets on the third Wednesday
of every month at the Senior Center. It is facilitated by
the Milton Visiting Nurses and Social Service League and the Milton
Council on Aging.
Library Services
The Milton Council on Aging co-sponsors a book delivery service
for homebound seniors with the Milton Public Library. The
volunteers deliver and return books, including a good selection
of large-print books.
Income Tax Assistance
A retired tax accountant volunteers tax preparation assistance
at the Senior Center in February or March. Advance appointments
are necessary.
Nutrition Program
South Shore Elder Services, Inc. serves lunch at Knowlton Hall,
Winter Valley, 600 Canton Avenue at 11:30 AM Mondays, Thursdays,
and Fridays. Reservations required 24 hours in advance.

S.H.I.N.E. (Serving Health Information Needs of
Elders)
This is a free service available to any Milton
senior who needs help in dealing with the complexities of health
insurance.
